Creative Writing Mentoring Service
Having a mentor working with you to discuss and help shape your writing is like having your own personal editor, looking over your shoulder, ready to help fine-tune your work and maximise your chances of success.
How does it work?
- You submit your writing, piece by piece.
- Your submission is reviewed by your mentor.
- The review, comments and suggestions are sent to you.
- You can ask questions, get advice and discuss any points with your mentor.
In detail:
You submit your work, one session at a time. At each ‘session’ you may submit up to 3/3500 words of your manuscript or project. This will be read and reviewed by your mentor (the same mentor will work with you throughout the course) and you will be sent a fully detailed report after each submission, with advice and suggestions.
After you have had time to work through the report, you will have a 30 minute personal discussion with your mentor, where you can discuss any questions raised by the report, talk over any changes or alterations you think you should make – or just cover any other work related subject that you feel would be relevant.
These one-to-one sessions are held at a mutually convenient time, either by using the LSJ online classroom which offers both text based discussion and real-time one-to-one video-conferencing or, if you prefer, by using email. Some tutors will accept 'discussions' by post - others will only work online.
Some authors complete the first draft of their ms. and then submit it, chapter by chapter, taking time between submissions to revise and re-write following the advice they have been given in the previous session. Others will write as they go, submitting work each time they have enough new writing to make up a submission.
If your initial submission is part of an already completed manuscript, please include a synopsis.
Please make sure your manuscript is produced in a 12 point font (arial or helvetica are preferable) double-spaced and saved as an rtf, doc or pdf file ready to email to us.
All submissions must be made electronically. After completing the enrolment form, email your first submission to mentors@lsj.org (put the reference number given on your enrolment confirmation page in the subject line).
If your manuscript will not logically break into chapters of around the required word-count, you may roll two sessions together, and submit more than 3500 words, so long as the total is not more than 7000 words.
