Here is something different from the condensed precis of famous works that form the basis of so much of the teaching of English literature. You do not need to have an extensive prior knowledge of the subject, but you should have an interest in reading.

Illustrated with examples from the texts being discussed, the course follows the mainstream of English literature from Chaucer to our own times. Suggested readings are provided for each module, and the essay topics are designed to help you enlarge your understanding of the pieces concerned.

This course will provide a great deal of pleasure for those who like reading, and who enjoy thinking and writing about what they have learnt from that reading.
Topics covered include:

The beginnings of English
The Renaissance
Shakespeare to Milton
The Age of Reason

The Romantic revival
The theatre
The great Victorians
Our own times
